There's a growing problem, and the signs of it are everywhere. Do you want a peek?
Then grab your local newspaper and start scanning the ads. Open up your internet browser and look at web sites from your local stores or service providers. See those billboards you're driving by every day. Take a good look. What do you see?
Now, I've got to warn you...It's going to get ugly. But if you keep reading, it'll change the way you view your marketing FOREVER.
Your marketing dollars are being wasted
Your phone rang this morning. It was the newspaper rep calling to share with you the fantastic deal they have going on right now. Of course, you'll have to act soon because this is only good until the end of the month.
So, do you want to put in an ad?
You have the ad from last time. No one called from it, but it looked pretty good and a few people commented that they saw it and were impressed. Maybe this time you'll get some business from it. After all, you have do to do SOME type of marketing, right? What's it cost?
"That's the good news", he answers in his best perky salesman persona. He explains that they're only $320 per eighth page ad for a commitment of 8. But you can stretch them out to any time-frame you'd like. You know deep down that you can't really afford it, but the word "Okay" just came out of your mouth. "Great, you're in!", he exclaims. "We'll just use the same ad, right? You want to use the same credit card number?"
Crossing your fingers and praying for results
Your ad has been in the past 3 weeks, and no one has called, but a couple friends told you they saw it and it looked great. You try to console yourself with, "Maybe advertising just doesn't work for my business." After all, I'm a photographer and not many people are hiring professional photographers these days.
Now, the ad ran all 8 times, your $2,500 is gone and all you got was one call from a guy looking for photographic advice for his 9-year old son. "What's the best digital camera for under $100?" The newspaper rep hasn't called since you gave him your credit card number, and you're back to wondering if it was a good ad. But, you have to do SOME marketing, right?
The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth
Your teeny-weeny ad stunk.
But it's not your fault.
And, by the way, most small businesses share your story.
You're a photographer, not a professional marketer. How are you supposed to know how to create a good ad? If you could afford a marketing agency, you'd have a good ad, a much better web site, maybe some direct mail that would get the phone ringing or people coming to your store, and a solid plan for how all this would work together. But you can't.
